Genitive case

Used to indicate possession of an object.

Meaning: of (something), ‘s (indicate possession).

Questions: Of what; whose? Юуны? Хэний?


Pronouns:

1st person Миний (mine)Бидний (ours)
2nd person Чиний (yours)Таны (yours)
3rd person Түүний (his/hers/its)Тэдний (theirs)

Suffixes:

Used with word stems ending in a back vowel (а, о, я, у, ё)
-ынUsed with word stems NOT ending in a back vowel
Used with word stems ending in a diphthong (ай, ой, уй, эй, үй, ий)
-ийнUsed with words ending in a back vowel
Used with words ending in a front vowel (ө, ү, э, е)
-ийUsed with front vowel word stems ending in a
-нийUsed with words with a long front vowel stem ending in a fleeting n
Ширээ= ширээний
-гийнUsed with word stems with a hidden g
Шуудан= шуудангийн

Genitive Case Rules:

Use -x to indicate possession when using pronouns such as Минийх (mine)

  • Өмнө (before; in front of)

  • Хамт (together)
  • Хойно (behind)
  • Дэргэд (near)
  • Дараа (after)
  • Дунд (in the middle of)
  • Дотор (within; admidst)
  • Дор (under)
  • Гадаа (outside)

Examples:

Монголын тухай (about Mongolia)
